“Hoe kun je stelen wat je zelf gedolven hebt”? Dat vraagt één van de creuseurs in Pale Beko Bantu. Zoals deze arbeiders ertsen winnen uit de groeven van Katanga, dat is niet meer van deze tijd. Uit tunnels en putten spitten ze de grond naar buiten en brengen dat ruwe materiaal als een levende transportband naar het aardoppervlak. Levensgevaarlijk labeur, barslecht betaald. Boven wordt de grond gewassen en gezeefd door vrouwen en kinderen tot er een concentraat overblijft dat tot 15% kobalt of koper kan bevatten.

Amnesty International continues to receive reports of serious human rights abuses, including unlawful killings of civilians, rape and forced recruitment, and of extensive looting in the conflict zones.

Amnesty International welcomes the UN SC resolution authorizing the reinforcement of MONUC, the UN peacekeeping force in the DRC, but reminds international community that the human rights and humanitarian urgency in eastern DRC remains the same - every day of delay is costing lives. Urgent implementation of the resolution is needed.

Kinshasa, Novembre 25, 2008 - Congolese state security forces have killed an estimated 500 people seen as opponents to President Joseph Kabila and detained another 1,000 in the two years since internationally backed elections brought him to power, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Tuesday.
