Toastmasters is a weird sounding name if you happen not to be a native English speaker. The first notion is probably that what pops out of your toaster in the morning. If, however you are more of a socialite you may then link the word Toast with the well known after-dinner speaking engagements, or any events where a speech is given before or during the main occasion.
Mastering the art of toast speeching, or 'toasting' as it is often named, gave the organization its name, "Toastmasters", and the first meeting was the October 1924 meeting of the Number One Toastmasters Club in Santa Ana, California. In January 1938 Charter No.100 was presented to the Century Toastmasters Club in Santa Ana, California and over the years Toastmasters grew into a enormous international organization in over 90 countries, while still remaining loyal to its first goal; helping people to become better public speakers.
