"Last week, much was made on the decision by some networks, including NBC and CNN, to call the sectarian violence in Iraq a civil war.

Now UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has essentially called the situation in Iraq a civil war, too. Actually, he has called the situation in Iraq "much worse" than a civil war. Is "much worse" than a civil war the new "almost" a civil war?

This is from a BBC interview with Annan: "I think, given the level of violence, the level of killing and bitterness and the way that forces are arranged against each other. A few years ago, when we had the strife in Lebanon and other places, we called that a civil war. This is much worse."
