The fifth anniversary of the invasion and occupation of Iraq comes closer to six years after Bush and Cheney began misappropriating funds to illegally begin transfering troops and resources to the region in preparation for the assault. Of course, the whole enterprise is illegal on a number of levels: it's a war of aggression, it was opposed by the UN Security Council, it was based on defrauding Congress, it did not follow a congressional declaration of war, it has made use of illegal weapons, illegally targeted civilians and ambulances, hospitals and journalists, it has been marketed with dishonest propaganda, its aims include the theft of another nation's resources, and so on. But it is significant that Bush and Cheney stole money from the Pentagon to begin the war prior to any Congressional authorization, because Congress understands that if it cuts off the war funding, Bush and Cheney will take it from elsewhere in the Pentagon again, and again illegally, but this time publicly, and Congress will be forced to close down or impeach. This fear of having to stand up and do its job and impeach criminals in the White House keeps the occupation going. And the American people, who favor both peace and impeachment are likewise too scared to force Congress to do its job. The victims of our fear are the people of Iraq. For this I am deeply ashamed on this anniversary and each and every day of the now-begun New American Century.
