Of course we're all from Barcelona
Of course we're all from Barcelona
Ever met a Swedish band of 20 something members that pretends to be catalan but who's as much catalan as i I'm blonde? Well, we lucky people from Indymedia had been quite lucky yesterday night thanks to our favourite cultural stagiair Gianni to get free tickets for the entrance of their gig in Molenbeek, in a tiny little venue called VK. And so we went despite the coldness of the up-rising winter, doubting the cleverness of the idea, thinking what the hell is this all about, in other words moaning... - you might at this point think some frenchness has interfered in the narration of this so-called little story and actually you might happen to be true.
Anyway, we reached the place and found out some of Indymedia volunteers responding to the sweet names of Jan and Tine, penetrated the dark and non-smoky room - I still don't get the purpose of a gig without a huge volute of smoke surrounding it which I think everyone will agree makes it much more cinematic - and then the band appears on stage. At this point, I swear it took all of us a second to be embraced by the warmness of this joyful band of friends, a second I guess to be seduced.
Within another sec, jumpers and shirts were thrown in the air and that was it, we were trapped in this frantic circle of dancing and jumping around. We're from Barcelona has this special trick to put a smile on your face, they're not uptight. They might actually be the best response to those boring canadians of Arcade Fire. Don't believe the hype of the magazines, they could be your neighbours waking you at 3 am sharp by beating up metallic boxes just to explore the musicality of it but still no trace of over-sophistication of that sort is noticeable in their work and we thank them for that.
Describing their music then would be surely limiting its register as they're neither poppy nor a bunch of hippie, they're more than that, actually they ... well you know, they're from Barcelona. And it says it all basically. And when you really think about it, aren't we all from f*cking Barcelona?
